Digital Jackson Pollock

Current mood: artistic

Category: Art and Photography

Jackson Pollock is one of my favorite artists. He began painting with his (often very large) canvases on the floor, and developed what was called his "drip" (or his preferred term, "pour") technique. He used his brushes as implements for dripping paint, and the brush never touched the canvas.

Of course art is subjective and many have argued stating that his work is not art. Looking at a Pollock painting in person is remarkable. There is so much going on in his paintings. Most of his paintings are rather large and his studio was very small. I've stepped into a replica of his studio in a museum in NYC. Very small, and bare.

Pimpscooby, a fellow TPN member posted a site which allows you to create your own Pollock painting. It's a flash site based on his pour technique.
The site is very responsive, though you can hit a few snags. If you leave the mouse in one spot you'll have a blob. If you move slowly the paint will be poured thick. Move fast and the paint will be poured very thin. Clicking the mouse changes the color. I used the website with my drawing tablet and it worked very well. I had the pen in the air, over the tablet, to let the paint fall just like Pollock. I only hit the tablet to change the color. Such a great site. Give it a try. It's very fun.
